We've all heard of on-line dating scams that try to get you to send money to someone in Ghana or Nigeria.
But now, the number of people falling for those scams is growing at an alarming number.
WASHINGTON—In a comprehensive analysis of the nation’s media consumption habits, a report published Friday by the Pew Research Center found that most Americans now receive their news while holding their hands over their eyes and peeking out between their fingers.
OCEAN CITY, NJ—Noting the total absence of adults with any apparent role in local commerce, visitors to Ocean City, New Jersey, told reporters Friday that the economy of the vacation town seemed run entirely by overwhelmed high schoolers.
Many of those being targeted are senior citizens longing to get back in the dating pool."I got lonely and I spent a lot of time on the computer playing games, and I just happened to go to the date site," Janet Cook told us.
When Janet Cook went looking for love online, 17 years after losing her husband, she found someone on the very first day."I liked him you know because he said sweet things and he was very charming and had a kind of a gentle demeanor about him," Cook said.
"That means as you get older you have to be even more vigilant."Aside from social security and a reverse mortgage check, Janet Cook works part-time as a church secretary to supplement her modest income.
She's now trying to recoup some of her lost savings from match.com, the site where the scammer found her.
But in Redwood, like rural outposts all over the US, I knew about people's love lives before we'd even been introduced. There are millions of older singles online now and most of them are choosing to join mainstream dating sites so they can benefit from the advanced features and premium service. With so many older dating sites online, singles over 50 and 60 still have a lot chance to meet that perfect someone.I'd never tended bar before, and loved listening to people's stories while pouring them generous shots of clear and bronze liquors; snapping metal caps off Genny Light and Busch bottles; and dutifully scribbling notes in my reporter's journal behind the bar.In cities, you can visit 100 different bars on 100 different nights and not run into any of the same people. Loneliness is normal at our silver age, but it doesn't have to be permanent.
